Bringing a new type of artwork experience to San Antonio!
I have been an artist all my life, drawing and painting every spare minute of the day. I am fascinated with creating beautiful things, getting most of my inspiration from the solitude in nature while I ride horses. I marvel at the colorful bounty in God’s creations. Glass has charmed me for years now and I attempt to capture the essence of light by using glass on glass to create as many variations as possible. My artwork is all original and is created organically.
As a teenager, I took a summer sculpting class at a museum. I was hooked on art! I loved creating but wanted more color. I moved into threads and fabrics, through spinning, weaving, knitting and garment construction. Mid-90’s I discovered fused glass. Then moved into lampworking and then glass painting. I found I was able to capture the color, light, movement, and texture I was looking for in my art.
I love being able to combine all the different techniques into a unique, organic piece(s), whether it is functional glassware, wall art or jewelry. Most recently I have been using my designs in quilting and translating them into glass. Being able to cross from such different mediums provides a challenge in perspective as well as being able to capture the essence of what I am trying to communicate.
Blue Fire Glass LLC is a combination of two artists- Blue Horse Glass by Leah Stephen, and Fire and Glass Designs by Valerie Larson-Lohr. Since 2005, they first discovered their love of fused glass with Valerie’s question to Leah, “If I get a kiln, will you learn how to fuse glass with me?”. And the rest, they say, is history! They began their journey together selling glass mosaics and small fused items around the San Antonio area. Then business really boomed when Leah moved to England and began selling their glass artworks and jewelry in Ely, England at the Stained Glass Museum. stainedglassmuseum.com Both have been active in the San Antonio Glass Art Guild saglassguild.com, Leah serving as President for two years and Valerie as her Vice-President, along with many other officer positions and duties for years. Together, they have organized art gallery events, art shows and sales, organized and participated in many charity events such as San Antonio’s Empty Bowls, Lighthouse for the Blind’s Art in the Dark, and Beads of Courage. They are passionate about the glass medium and believe that glass artwork should be a permanent and enlightening experience in your household, renewing your soul as you explore the translucent light.
